Summary

The purpose of the school board chairperson is to lead the board. The purpose of the superintendent is to lead the school district. For strong governance to occur consistently at the school board table, the chair must be carefully chosen, and then be attentive to meeting agendas, to making sure meetings are held for a reason and that those reasons are achieved, and to be cognizant of the personalities around the table. With the skills and tools outlined in this chapter, school board chairs contribute significantly to the attainment of the vision and goals of the district, and to the development of a consistently stronger governing board.

Board chairs lead school boards toward the greater goals of education in the district. They are not in charge of the school district, and this applies to private schools and to faith-based schools as well. The chair’s role is intimately related to the board’s job, not the superintendent’s job. The board chair assures the integrity and fulfillment of the board’s processes. An effective chairperson leads an effective board, as evidenced by an inspiring mission and vision statement, clearly defined goals, board agendas and minutes that chart progress toward fulfillment of the board’s goals, and the board’s impressive track record and relationship with the community it represents.
